Summary Paraphrase Used in PFA (Psychological First-Aid)
How are you doing? NOT "You doing okay?" What your saying is, In other words, Sounds to me like, What I'm hearing you say is, Rephrase the essence of their message in your words back to them like a mirror. Since most messages have an objective and emotional aspect, you must decide which one is more important and when to reflect it back to them. It is often the most beneficial to start with the emotional aspect. As we remember the famous words of Aristotle "There are 3 elements to discourse; logos (the logic, the rational mind), ethos (the sense of credibility and do you understand who I am?), and Pathos which is emotion. Aristotle once said The word to logos and rational action is often paved through pathos. We must sometimes bear witness to their distress before they are ready to receive objective assistance.
